Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland and fled to Pennsylvania, a free state, in 1849. She was one of the country’s leading abolitionists before the Civil War and was the Underground Railroad lifeline for slaves escaping to freedom. Actress, director and playwright Cynthia Maddox portrays Tubman in this solo performance. The tea series portrays notable women in history and literature.
